The Fostex TH1000RPmk2 is the closed-back flagship of Fostex's premium RP planar magnetic line, built around the second-generation Premium RP Driver with an enlarged planar diaphragm, a redesigned printed coil pattern, and a strengthened magnetic circuit. Fostex adds acoustic filters and damping material to control air movement inside the driver, which is the change the company credits for the mk2's improved low-frequency expression.
Each pair is housed in solid hard maple hand-dyed with Awa Aizome natural indigo, a traditional Tokushima craft applied and dried by hand over several days. Because the dye is applied to natural wood, the grain and depth of colour differ from pair to pair, so no two sets look exactly alike. Magnesium alloy mechanical parts cut 20 percent of the weight of comparable aluminum components while suppressing unwanted vibration.
Premium RP Driver mk2
Fostex's proprietary RP (Regular Phase) planar magnetic technology was first introduced in 1974 and has been refined continuously since. The second-generation premium driver enlarges the planar diaphragm, redesigns the printed coil pattern, and fits larger magnets in a revised magnetic circuit to suppress unwanted resonance, delivering high sensitivity, smooth frequency response, and precise imaging from deep bass to extended treble.
Air-Damping Control
New acoustic filters and damping material inside the driver assembly regulate air movement behind the diaphragm. This is the headline improvement over the previous generation and is what Fostex credits for the mk2's stronger low-frequency reproduction.
Redesigned Two-Layer Ear Pads
The mk2 ear pads use a two-layer internal structure that combines high-resilience foam with soft memory foam, covered in silk protein synthetic leather. A natural sheepskin head pad and headband keep the fit supple over long sessions.
3.5 mm Detachable Cabling
The mk2 moves from the previous rhodium-plated 2-pin connector to 3.5 mm 2-pole connectors on each earcup, which greatly widens aftermarket cable compatibility. The supplied 2 m cable uses 7N grade (99.99999 percent) high-purity OFC conductors and terminates in a 6.3 mm gold-plated stereo plug. An optional ET-TH4.4BL2Y 4.4 mm 5-pole balanced cable is available separately.
