The Warm Audio JUDE-MP is a single-channel microphone preamp based on the original Sound Techniques A-Range console circuit. Developed through an official collaboration with Sound Techniques, it brings the distinctive preamp design associated with historic Trident Studios recording equipment into a modern studio format. The circuit was designed by Geoff Frost, the engineer behind the original console design. Its Class-A architecture is intended to preserve the depth, punch, and musical character associated with the original equipment.
Authentic Signal Path
Jude preserves key elements of the original A-Range preamp design rather than simply recreating its general sonic character. The signal path includes a dual-discrete 3035 Class-A amplifier and the original-style impedance-matching control developed around Geoff Frost's design. This approach allows the preamp to respond dynamically to different microphones and source signals. The resulting architecture provides a broad range of tonal interaction for engineers working with both vintage and modern microphones.
Z-Match Impedance Control
The 9-position Z-Match control provides variable microphone input impedance and changes the interaction between the microphone and preamp. By selecting different impedance settings, engineers can alter the response and tonal character of connected microphones. The available settings include 60Ω, 200Ω, and 1.5KΩ input impedance ranges through the Z-Match circuit. This makes the Jude particularly useful when experimenting with different microphones, recording techniques, and desired tonal responses.
Custom Transformer Design
Jude uses custom-wound CineMag transformers selected specifically for the preamp design. Its input stage incorporates a 3-impedance CineMag transformer, while the output stage uses a high-purity nickel CineMag transformer. These transformer stages work with the discrete Class-A circuitry to shape the overall response and character of the preamp. Premium Wima and Nichicon audio-grade capacitors are also incorporated into the circuit for a carefully selected component configuration.
Hand-Wired Construction
The Jude is manufactured using a hand-wired construction approach based on specifications supplied by Sound Techniques. Its component selection, PCB layout, transformers, and signal path are designed around the original console architecture. The aluminum faceplate and steel chassis provide a durable enclosure suitable for professional studio environments. A VU meter provides visual level indication, giving engineers a convenient way to monitor signal levels during recording.
