Description
The Warm Audio JUDE-MP2 is a two-channel microphone preamp based on the original Sound Techniques A-Range console circuitry. Developed through collaboration between Sound Techniques and Warm Audio, it brings the historic console design into a modern stereo recording format. The circuit was designed by Geoff Frost, whose work helped establish the character of the original consoles. Jude preserves the architecture responsible for the distinctive depth, punch, and musical response associated with classic British recordings.
Dual-Channel Configuration
The JUDE-MP2 provides two independent microphone preamp channels for stereo recording and multi-microphone applications. Each channel uses the dual-discrete 3035 Class-A amplifier design and provides variable gain according to its selected impedance setting. This configuration makes the unit suitable for stereo recording techniques as well as tracking multiple sources simultaneously. It is particularly useful for stereo instruments, drum overheads, ensembles, and other applications requiring two matched recording paths.
Z-Match Impedance Control
Each channel incorporates a 9-position Z-Match control derived from the original Sound Techniques impedance-matching design. The circuit changes the interaction between the connected microphone and preamp, allowing engineers to explore different tonal responses. Available microphone impedance settings include 60Ω, 200Ω, and 1.5KΩ. This flexibility allows the preamp to work creatively with a wide range of vintage and modern microphones.
Custom Transformer Stages
The JUDE-MP2 uses custom-wound CineMag transformers in both the input and output stages. Its input transformers provide three impedance configurations, while the output transformers use a high-purity nickel design. These transformer stages complement the discrete Class-A circuitry and contribute to the unit's overall sonic character. Wima and Nichicon audio-grade capacitors and carbon resistors are also selected as part of the circuit implementation.
Stereo Recording Applications
The JUDE-MP2 is designed for engineers and producers who want classic console-style character across two recording channels. Its combination of variable impedance, transformer coupling, Class-A amplification, and flexible I/O makes it suitable for vocals, guitars, pianos, drums, stereo overheads, and other sources. Independent channel operation provides flexibility for both stereo and dual-mono recording setups. Phantom power, polarity switching, and line-level switching further support common professional studio workflows.
