Description

The LD Systems MON 15 A G3 W (MON15AG3W) is a 15-inch powered coaxial stage monitor in white, built for bands, houses of worship and production companies that need a loud, low-profile wedge. A Class D amplifier drives the coaxial driver with 300 W RMS (1200 W peak), reaching 122 dB average and 129 dB peak SPL with a frequency response of 58 Hz to 18 kHz at -3 dB. It is used as a floor wedge on loud stages, as a drum fill, or on its own as a compact front PA where a separate subwoofer is not practical.

How does the MON 15 A G3 W compare to the MON 12, MON 10 and MON 8?

All four white MON G3 wedges share the same 300 W RMS / 1200 W peak Class D amplifier, the same 50° x 90° CD horn and the same 33° monitor angle. What changes as you move up the range is cone area, low-end reach, maximum SPL and weight.

Model Woofer Max SPL (avg / peak) Low end (-10 dB) Crossover Weight
MON 15 A G3 W (this monitor) 15" 122 / 129 dB 48 Hz 1300 Hz 23.15 kg (51 lb)
MON 12 A G3 W 12" 120 / 127 dB 55 Hz 1400 Hz 17.4 kg (38 lb)
MON 10 A G3 W 10" 118 / 126 dB 58 Hz 1700 Hz 15.21 kg (34 lb)
MON 8 A G3 W 8" 116 / 121 dB 59 Hz 2500 Hz 13.2 kg (29 lb)

If you already know one of the smaller wedges, these are the real differences:

  • It reaches 58 Hz at -3 dB, against 68 Hz on the MON 12 A G3 W. That extra low-end reach is the reason LD Systems rates the 15 for stand-alone use as a compact front PA, and the reason it holds up as a drum fill.
  • 2 dB more average and 2 dB more peak SPL than the MON 12. 122 dB / 129 dB against 120 dB / 127 dB. The amplifier is identical, so the extra output comes from the larger cone and the 3-inch voice coil, not from more power.
  • The crossover sits at 1300 Hz, the lowest point in the range. The MON 12 crosses at 1400 Hz, the MON 10 at 1700 Hz and the MON 8 at 2500 Hz, so the 15 hands over to the compression driver earliest and keeps more of the vocal range on the horn.
  • It is the largest and heaviest of the four. 505 x 340 x 517 mm and 23.15 kg (51 lb), against 17.4 kg (38 lb) for the MON 12. If wedges get carried up stairs every weekend, that is a real difference.
  • Stepping up does not buy more power. Every model in the range is 300 W RMS / 1200 W peak. You are buying cone area and low-end extension, not amplifier watts.

Is the white MON 15 A G3 W different from the black MON 15 A G3?

Only the finish. LD Systems publishes identical figures for both: 300 W RMS / 1200 W peak, 122 dB average and 129 dB peak SPL, 58 Hz to 18 kHz at -3 dB, a 1300 Hz crossover, 505 x 340 x 517 mm and 23.15 kg. If the stage look does not call for white, the MON 15 A G3 in black is the same monitor and normally sells for less.

What does a coaxial driver change on a stage wedge?

It puts the high-frequency driver on the same axis as the woofer, so both arrive from a single point rather than from two sources a few inches apart. That matters more on a wedge than on a front-of-house cabinet, because the performer is standing roughly three feet away, inside the distance at which a conventional two-way box has properly blended its drivers. The MON 15 A G3 W pairs a 15-inch (381 mm) woofer on a 3-inch (75 mm) voice coil with a 1-inch compression driver carrying a 1.75-inch (44.45 mm) titanium diaphragm, firing through an integrated 50° x 90° constant-directivity horn.

What can the DynX DSP do?

It gives you four application presets, a 3-band EQ, a notch filter for feedback and a delay line, all set from the rear panel. Controls are an on/off switch and a single rotary/push encoder next to an LC display, so nothing needs a laptop or a phone app. The delay line compensates for distances of up to 10 m (33 ft), which is what you use when the wedge sits well back from the source you are time-aligning it to, or when the cabinet is working as a delay speaker rather than a monitor.

How do you run several monitors from one cable run?

Both the audio and the mains connections loop through the cabinet. There are two XLR / 6.3 mm jack combo inputs and two XLR line-thru outputs, so signal passes to the next wedge without a splitter, and the PowerCON-compatible inlet has a matching outlet for daisy-chaining power. Across a four-wedge stage that is one signal run and one power run rather than eight separate cables back to the rack.

Common questions

Can I use it as a front PA on its own, without a subwoofer?
Yes. LD Systems rates the MON 15 A G3 W for stand-alone use as a compact front PA, and the 58 Hz (-3 dB) low-end reach is what makes that work. Material with sustained deep bass will still be better served by adding a sub, but for speech, acoustic sets and small band shows it covers the range on its own.

Does it have a cooling fan?
No. Cooling is passive, through a heat sink on the rear panel, so there is no fan noise to deal with in a quiet room or a recorded service.

What mains voltage does it run on?
100 to 240 V AC at 50 or 60 Hz, drawing 150 W, so the same cabinet works on US and international power without a voltage switch.

Is the white finish durable enough for touring?
It is a polyurea coating over a 15 mm birch plywood and MDF enclosure, with a steel grille across the front, which is the same construction LD Systems uses on the black models. White cabinets show scuffs sooner than black ones, so a padded cover is worth budgeting for if the monitors travel every week.
