How to build a DJ light show

Starter rig: a single all in one effect bar or a pair of derby and wash fixtures on a stand covers house parties and small bars. Add a fog machine and you already have a show.

What lights do I need to start DJing?

What is the difference between fog and haze?

Fog produces thick, visible clouds that billow and dissipate. Haze creates a fine, even suspension in the air that you barely notice until light passes through it, which is what makes beams and lasers stand out.

Do I need a DMX controller for DJ lights?

Not to start. Many fixtures run in sound active or automatic mode on their own. DMX becomes worthwhile once you are running several fixtures and want precise, repeatable cues across the whole rig.

How many uplights do I need for a room?

Roughly one uplight every 8 to 10 feet around the perimeter. Small receptions typically use 8 to 12, mid sized ballrooms 16 to 24, and large venues 30 or more.
